The Building

St Luke’s Church is the successor to the first Presbyterian church in Greenock, established 400 years ago. Select this link to open our Church Family Tree.

The present building was constructed in 1843 by D. Cousin and was called the New West Kirk. When first built there was no steeple or clock which were added in 1856. The clock is recognised as one of the finest examples of its type in Scotland. The building is grade A listed.

The Parish

The parish stretches West to Robertson Street, East to Duncan Street, North to Union Street and South to Barrs Cottage.

We Are

St. LUKE’s CHURCH has about 900 members, people of all ages. Men, women, sons, daughters, one parent or two parent families, grand parents, children and friends. Married, not married, single, separated, divorced and remarried people. Different generations of brothers, sisters, adults and children and probably one or two pets as well. People new to the church and many who have been here longer than they care to remember. Folks who know little about the bible and others who know quite a lot. Sunday morning only members and those who are involved in many things. Beginners on the journey to faith and those who have travelled a long way. People from previous Church of Scotland congregations and folk who have never been members of any church. People who are looking for something bigger in life.

In other words people like you.

We Do

Learn and discuss and study the bible on Sunday morning and at special services. Provide a crèche, a Sunday School and a Bible Class. Make music with children and adults in our choir and at church services. Support our youth through the BB, Scouting and Guiding organisations and also provide a Sunday evening Youth Club. Offer many opportunities to people to work within our community with the housebound, hospitalised, young and old. Socialise together at church events and meet in our own unique interest groups. Discover more about ourselves and the world through our Men’s Association and the Guild. Play sport together in our Badminton and Bowling clubs. Dance with the Country Dance Class. Run summer and Easter children’s groups. Sing songs rooted in our historic traditions along with new songs from the world church.

Where Are We Going?

Join the journey of faith with people who want to be here. Be part of a community who don’t know it all but are asking the questions and trying hard to get answers.

Membership of St. Luke’s Church

Membership carries obligations to share in the life of our congregation, and in the wider work of the Church of Scotland as part of the Universal Church.

One aspect of this service is being prepared to take a turn in helping to run the various church organisations where vacancies are constantly arising as the present organisers leave the district or resign for various reasons.

Another aspect of membership is the financial one. Giving can be by Plate Collection, weekly Freewill Offering and most effectively by Deed of Covenant. The offering is collected during the service. Special collections are taken as required.
